Adam's Portrait

Writer's picture: Madeleina KayMadeleina Kay

I was nervous to paint Adam's portrait as I have never painted someone with an afro hairstyle before and I was worried it would turn out looking offensively unrecognisable.

Adam was very clear about his colour choice from the beginning; grey, blue, green and red - I decided to introduce some yellow/orange into that mix since the reason he chose red was to represent chinese lanterns - which usually feature a gold trim.

The photographs Adam sent me were professional portraits with some very interesting lighting, so I paid close attention to representing that through my colour palette choice.

I used a pinky-red for the sections of skin and an orangey-red to distinguish his hair and shirt, I'm not sure if this decision worked in the end, especially for ther white shirt which had much lighter tones than his black hair.

I'm not sure if trying to replicate the odd lighting so accurately worked or not, I feel like I could have improved the portrait by deviating slightly. But otherwise I am reasonably happy with how the portrait turned out, especially the eyes, nose and mouth.
