Satanic Church Prints

After the workshop with Christian at the Low Res, I was inspired to buy my own lino cut print kit...

I decided to have a go the wekend after I got home. I think the cats missed me whilst I was away...
I wanted to make a print of my favourite vegan venue in Sheffield, 'Church - Temple of Fun' - where I am having my 31st birthday party. I've previously painted the building and they bought a print of my painting which is displayed inside the venue.

I sketched out the design based on this painting - adding a ring of EU stars in the background.

However, I made the mistake of cutting the lines far too thin and as a result, I was not happy with any of the resulting print.

I tried using different colour inks on different types of paper, but the design was not clear enough on any option.

It was especially bad on textured paper....

But the best thing about mistakes is that you can learn from them. So I attempted a second design - this time, I cut the stars upside down so they look like satanic pentagrams which is more in-line with the ironically religious vibe of the venue.

I made a lot of prints to ensure that I would have 10 really nice ones to give to my friends.

I like the designs in blue and yellow because they are European colours....

But if I am honest, I think the black and white designs look far more dramatic and visually impactful.

Generally, I preferred the prints were the ink was more bold, but on the black card I actually liked the more faded, grainy ink effect.

I also tried printing on metalic card, but the ink refused to dry and then the cats walked on it and smudged it.

I think they look nice as a multi-colour set though.

I emailed the venue and asked if they could set the table with the prints as a surprise for when my friends arrive ...
